i remember watching a rockumentary on vh1 awhile back and they were talking about how van halen saved rock n roll during the 70s because disco had taken over the airwaves. when i heard "running" i knew right then and there that i wanted to play rock music instead of classical music (which is what i was playing at the time i played violin)i immeadiately changed from violin to upright bass and learned to read the music so i could do the driving bass lines that michael anthony was doing ive been playing bass guitar now for 30 years and i still play every day with my band. heh we played "running" on friday night just to screw around i love that song

Hey Unclemac! No, I was referring to the 1998 album with Gary Cherone that they called Van Halen III (which was not their third album but a pun on the fact this was the third line-up to record a Van Halen album). So I wasn't putting down any of the David Lee Roth material.

Of course Michael Anthony was nice... he's the bass player. Bass players are the back bone of any group and usually the nicest guys too. We don't get any of the chicks (that is for the vocalist and guitarist) but we keep the group going.

Byron, do you mean "Women & Children First"?... there was no "VH III". Yes, while I did buy it, I admit it was a huge disappointment after VH I & II (altho "Everybody wants some" off that release has always been one of my favorite tunes of theirs - especially after being used in one of my favorite John Cusack movies - "Better Off Dead", during one of his animated daydream sessions while he's at work at Pig Burger). By & large, I liked all of their albums up thru "Fair Warning". They started losing me on "Diver Down", tho, & I absolutely loathed "1984", ESPECIALLY the song "Hot For Teacher"!! I'm also with you on Van Hagar - I LOVE Sammy Hagar. "Red", "Trans Am", "This Planet's On Fire", "Heavy Metal", etc., etc., not to mention his Montrose stuff which is some of my favorite music of all time, but I never liked hardly anything that VH did with Hagar. I got to meet VH in '78 working for the promoter of a big music festival at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas TX over the 4th of July weekend. Saturday was the rock 'n' roll day - about 15 acts with co-headliners Aerosmith/Ted Nugent, between sets MC's, Cheech & Chong, and Han Halen opening the show. Michael Anthony was very nice & engaging, Alex VH stayed to himself & didn't seem to want to speak to or engage with anyone, & David Lee & Eddie were absolute loud, obnoxious, arrogant, rude assholes. While I liked allot of VH's music & respected Eddie's talent, his & DLR's behavior at that event always blemished my overall appreciation of them... too bad.

I fixed it... thank you! As I said earlier, I was not in a great mood when I did this.

Also, I type too fast sometimes and that's how some mistakes go by...

"Your producer," not "you're producer." Sorry. It's just misused apostrophes always set my teeth on edge and turn me into a complete grammar nazi. Perhaps it's because it brings up bad memories of 6th grade for me. I despised my 6th grade teacher, who among other things didn't know how to use apostrophes and was supposed to be teaching us English.

Also, you've committed a glaring grammar-bad. See your editor for details!

I didn't know about Simmon's being involved in the band. I read the Wiki article and it seems he dropped them and then they became famous. Typical.

I always chuckle at the fact that the reason Roth was in the group in the first place was because he had the P.A. System. Too funny. Hey, they rocked for their time and it still holds up today...

They're all old farts like me know... and it ain't easy doin' the rock and roll thing once you're over 50 (well, for me at least). The Stones should be reading this...

Thanks for the compliment!

You know, I'm a fan of Sammy Hagar. Love his "VOA" album and "Marching to Mars" but with Van Halen I was never to happy with the sound. David Lee Roth was their main man, but alas, that's not be it seems.

And did ANYONE buy Van Halen III? I didn't think so...

*laughs* So where's Gene Simmons? He was the one who helped Van Halen get their record deal... and he's somewhat of a demon, too (both on and off stage - he's supposed to be a real prick!), so it would fit. :)

Ah, Van Halen! Back when their first album came out, it hit my 8th grade class like a fucking bomb. After "Eruption," every other guitar solo seemed tame by comparision! Thanks, Byron. :)

I was reading an article in Q a few years back about Van Halen's long road from back yard party band to that landmark first album, and you made a great choice. Back in '77, the band would have been great company for the gang! (Supposedly, David Lee Roth was really nice offstage, but couldn't nail a vocal take to save his life. Then again, that WAS Eddie talking about about that last bit, so who knows...)

At least it wasn't a Joke with Eddie coming out of the washroom with his guitar like they did in Two in a Half Men :P

Now I'm gonna crank some Van Halen (not Van Hagar) in my I-pod on my way back home!
