A little private eye competition always ends badly. Now we know how Magnum ended up in Hawaii… no matter what the show producers say. Don’t know who Nick Danger is? Google Firesign Theatre, you’ll find him. The original Nick Danger bit from 1969 is the best and splits my gut every time.
Story moves along next week and I’ll crank out two comics next week. Dizzy spells seem gone so I’ve been busy catching up on all my freelance work and this story. More as I have it!
Today’s song says thank you to all of you who have helped my family and me this year with your kindness and your support. Enough said. You’re the best damned readers on the planet.
BTO’s “Thank You for the Feeling” was the final track on their first album and they used it to end their concerts for years. It’s a simple little tune that talks of a wild night and waking up the morning after with a random female next to you. Had that experience a few times in the late ’70s! So the song reminds me of some wild weekends and trying to remember who was next to me on a Sunday morning.

For you non-Anagram fans out there, Prerogative Visitant is an anagram for private investigator! I love internet Anagram generators. Fun for all!

When ever Nick Danger talks I hear Charles Bronson.
Ah, our “Death Wish” guy, Mr. Bronson. At the time, I would go see his films, but when I see them today, I kinda go “What the hell was I on?” Something, as they don’t hold up well.
You did a Firesign reference! You did a Firesign reference! ~faints with teh happy~
And oh my, what a…er…colourful shirt Magnum is wearing. And what a 1977-appropriate print that is on it. You, sir, reign.
The Firesign Theatre material has to be listened to several times (at least for me) to get all the references they’re tossing in. They weave some many things into their albums it’s not even funny. The album that “Nick Danger” appears on actually has a clip of the Danger track playing backwards (I think) on the other side of the album in one bit. “Shoes for Industry!” the title alone makes me laugh.
Great…Magnum walks in the door and now I can’t get the theme song out of my head.
Try drawing the guy for a couple hours… that really gets that theme going in your head!
My first three takes on Mr. Magnum looked more like Burt Reynolds then Magnum. Now I gotta work Reynolds into the comic… and with “Smokey and the Bandit” being released in 1977, I’m sure he’ll pop up someday.
“East bound and down…” …. Damnit! Another song stuck in my head now…
Ha, Magnum PI got shot in the foot.
While it may hurt it was kind of funny in way.
Ah, it’s cartoon “pain”… so Magnum didn’t suffer too much.
Also, I know more than one reader is not too found of Mr. Selleck, so I thought having him shot by Nick Danger was rather apropo.
Nice Firesign reference and Magnum PI in one strip, awesomeness to the 10th power. I would have figured the power of Magnum’s stache would have protected him from the bullet.
The one and only thing Magnum and I have in common is our trademark mustaches. I’ve had mine since 1974 (really thin back then). Though, I do own the “Magnum” Hawaiian shirt (the red one with blue flowers). It no longer fits me as I, like Magnum, have put on a few pounds since the early ’80s.
My buddies and I used to repeat the Firesign Theater albums from memory all the time. It was probably pretty annoying to others, but we found it very entertaining!
I always thought that here should have been a spin off series from Magnum P.I. It could have been about Robin Master’s gardener:
Sphagnum!
Dave
I have the annoying habit of quoting lines from movies… “Splash” with Tom Hanks is one of my go-to movies of all times… “I’m on the bar…” “The LITTLE boat!?” “Bocce balls!” “The week I’m having!” “We’re not really twins.” On and on…
I can always find a Firesign Theater fan using this method. When someone asks whats up reply “We aint got anymore loco weed”. Most people say “What?” but there are a few that come back with “Sure have I have some road apple red right here”.
Their wit is astounding… like this exchange from Nick Danger:
Nancy: “You’ve called just in the nick of time!”
Nick: “You haven’t lost your delicate sense of humor, have you Nancy.”
Nancy: “What?”
At least he didn’t shoot that wonderful mustache.
Nothing can harm a Magnum mustache! Their dense molecular structure make them invulnerable to most attacks.
Great tie-ins today Byron, Firesign rocks! You sir, truly deserve to be the head bozo on the bus!
And I am….
Thanks man!
I want one of those Magnum P.I. shirts with the special 1977 print on it, Mine from the 80′s doesn’t fit me anymore either LOL .My mustache has long ago gone missing along with the hair on the top of my head (sigh) ah precious memories . At least I don’t have a cheesy theme song stuck in my head……Oh wait here it come along with the montage of a red Ferrari peeling out in sand.
