Never mess with Robyn… even if you’re a pair of horny Leprechauns. Yes, Robyn is wearing short-shorts in March, but she’s not the only one on the prowl for some 70s lovin’… she’s just looking for something a little taller.
Today’s comic was inspired by a silly chat with a one Kurt Sasso, a grand Canadian whose TGT Webcomics Podcast has made me a broadcasting legend again. Kurt and I were BS’ing as I was writing today’s comic. He drones on about Canadian lifestyles, so when he mentioned I should include midget tossing in the script my ears perked up. A few minutes later we had chuckled our way into today’s idea. Originally Robyn was going to toss a couple of rough and ready Irishmen out the bar’s window. Taking her anger out on some unlucky Leprechauns seemed more appropriate… especially since the past two St. Patrick’s day comics have featured Robyn either drinking or drinking with… a Leprechaun.
Why Randy Newman’s 1977 hit “Short People” instead of some traditional Irish jig or something or other? It was the first thing I thought of when I heard “midget tossing”. Newman’s song got him in a bit of hot water back in 1977 as short people all over the world got their tiny little underwear up in a bunch. Randy’s really talking about children… the real short people. Apparently Randy is none to fond of kids. They are messy little things…

“Jayzus t’ feck” I would use that curse but it just doesn’t roll off my tongue.
Being that I’m not Irish (but play one on TV) I got that from a good friend of mine. It seemed the least offensive of the ones suggested.
Funny how Newman wasn’t fond of kids, yet gets all that work from Pixar years later (some of which earns an Oscar)…
Well, at least he didn’t have to deal with any kids (outside the animators at Pixar) while composing the soundtracks.
Yes, it is funny how that came about.
LOL @ Jim Ryan: Life’s full of those “little” ironies, isn’t it?
Yah, I was in 7th grade when this song came out, and we used to sing it to all the brats who tagged along to pester us. Great song. Tho the people who really were height challenged used to get pretty mad….
Oh my, 7th grade, eh? You’re making an old man feel even older. My youngest is in 7th grade right now. Now that makes us both old.
Haha, as a fairly short person, I heard a lot of this song in college. But I can laugh at myself unlike most people.
My sister is the “short one” in our family and I turned out the tall, skinny kid who got teased all the time too, so whether you’re tall or short, some moron will make fun of you. I had thick, curly hair in the age when most boys wore crew cuts and I got a lot of shit for having “girls” hair, but later, in high school, those same guys who beat me up for having “different” hair were surprised to find that “chicks dig long, curly hair” as a rule. Score one for the geek.
It was about 1977 that I finally figured out just to ignore those idiots and have a good time regardless of what other people thought of me. Smoking pot helped too…
No “Lucky Charms” references? This is a classier place than I thought.
And I can still remember Randy Newman performing “Short People” on Saturday Night Live. Before he sang, he addressed all the naysayers with an impassioned speech about how his song wasn’t really about hating people and how we should all live together and…. Nah, I’m kidding. He just gave them a raspberry.
I just checked – on March 17, 1970, Chicago had a major snowstorm.
But how many pitchers of beer does it take to win?
now if robyn were smart, she’d've been nice to those little bastards and got some gold to pay off the studio wreckin’ debt, and once again, magic would prevail in the land o’ the ’77ers…
damn those plot complcations…
