In 1977, Queen released an album that contained two of their best known songs ever. The album was called “News of the World” and its cover a spoofed a 1953 issue of Astounding Science Fiction (October 1953) whose cover-art depicted a giant intelligent robot holding the dead body of a man. The cover was painted by artist Frank Kelly Freas who came back 24 years later to repaint the cover for Queen. Nice.
So, to spoof a spoof, I’ve drawn my version of that album cover. But I had to use the Iron Giant. Even though the two robots are similar in design, my heart goes out to our gentle Iron Giant… who isn’t so gentle in this version. Snacks anyone?

Oh, the two songs on the album everyone knows? “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions” which have gone on to make stadium sports just a tad more tolerable!

So. Much. Love.
This was a real kick to do. I want to do several more and perhaps put together a calendar of albums from 1977 with either the 1977 gang or famous cartoon characters. Mostly Plan 9…
Dude, I’d buy one of those! And I don’t even *like* calendars, normally
Great idea.
Vin Diesel’s best movie evarrrr
It’s funny to see them promote Iron Giant now and feature Diesel as a “star” and he had about maybe 10 lines as the Giant. “No following!” He was really unknown at the time. But, still, the right voice for the part.
TOO AWESOME!!! I was a big fan of Freas’ artwork back in the day, too. With every cartoon, a new flashback. Groovy, man.
Flashbacks are my specialty it seems. Having a few lately…
o_O
Sheer genius.
On occasion I get one right…
Love it. Heeeee!
I’ve got more up my sleeve… stay tooned…
I always end up skipping the first two tracks
Ive heard them waaaaaay too much.
also, My Melancholy Blues is clearly the best song on that album ^_-
I know, those to songs shadow over the rest of the songs and it’s really a good album. Going to dig it out and listen to again here soon. I’m finding albums like this that I haven’t heard in a long time hold up better than I expected.
Too cool Byron. I grew up with old issues of Astounding Science Fiction and the mag it became – Analog. Kelly Freas was pretty much their house illustrator and was God as far as I was concerned… and, you can never go wrong with Queen. Tying in two incredible artistic icons for a double shot of gold – you’ve done it again sir!
Oh yeah! Analog! I had forgotten they were one and the same! Love Analog! I’d read it now and then, but the cover art was always cool.
Man, I need to get out more… I’m forgetting more than I thought!
“…Superman!…” KABLOOOOOIEEEE!!!!
News of the World is a pretty solid album. I think my fave from it is “It’s Late”.
Nice work Byron!! Awesome!
I only recently saw Iron Giant, man was I missing out. Nice job on this piece!
